Why you should use serum on your scalp

“Skincare shouldn’t just stop at the hairline” is a mantra in the MONPURE offices and for good reason. So many of the ingredients that we’re familiar with in our facial serums, also do fantastic things for the skin on our scalp. Hence scalp serums should become a regular part of your skincare routine.

For a start, our scalps age in the same way as the skin on our face, and an ageing scalp equals dull, thinning hair and an increase in shedding – which can spiral into hair loss if we’re not careful.

And as with the skin on your face, the condition of your scalp tends to fluctuate, depending on the time of the month, the weather or the amount of time left between washing. Sometimes it can be more dry and flaky, other times more greasy and irritated.

If you’re experiencing itching or dry, flaky scalp-skin (which the cold weather isn’t helping) our Hydrate and Soothe Scalp Serum is the perfect antidote, containing a cocktail of scalp-quenching ingredients such as aloe vera and vitamin E, together with redness-reducing witch hazel to leave the scalp happy and hydrated. It can also help calm symptoms of redness, acne, eczema, sun damage and general stress on the scalp.

Otherwise, if you’re dealing with hair loss or thinning, you might want to start using our Follicle Boost Hair Density Serum every night before bed. It contains a special pumpkin seed extract, which our resident dermatologist Dr Sue Ann Chan is a big fan of.

“Pumpkin seed extract is becoming more widely used in helping to treat hair loss,” she says. “Testosterone in our body produces a chemical called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which in excess may cause hair loss in certain individuals. This chemical is released by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which pumpkin seed extract helps to block. That’s what makes it effective in preventing hair loss.”

It also contains castor oil to ‘feed’ the scalp and stimulate blood flow which works to boost hair growth, while retinol and lactic acid exfoliate to sweep away any dead skin and debris that can block the pores and inhibit hair growth. You will probably start to see a reduction in hair loss and increased thickness within a few weeks of using it.

Gently massage in a few drops of either serum into your roots morning and night to soothe stressed scalp-skin and deliver a good dose of moisture in the process – over time you will see an improvement in scalp health too. Used sparingly (a little goes a long way), each one’s lightweight yet hardworking formula won’t weigh the hair down either.
