Beth

“Hi, I’m Beth Finlay. Ever since shaving my head, I've always known my experience can be a part of something bigger and help other people going through the same thing. Even though talking about what I've been through makes me feel vulnerable, if it can help just one other person then it's worth it.

When i first started losing my hair and probably for about seven years of my hair loss journey I felt unworthy, ugly, different, insecure and depressed. I had no idea how to control it, I didn't know how to accept it (I don't think I even wanted to accept it), I just wanted to have hair like everyone else. Then one day I suddenly decided to shave my head and I've never felt more like myself or more confident. It didn't happen overnight but I've truly never been happier in my own skin."

Q&A

Mimi

Q. How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

A. I'm definitely an extroverted introvert. I've become pretty confident in recent years and I love being around people and socialising, but I also really appreciate time to myself. I'd also describe myself as creative, driven, a keen foodie, and an animal lover. And when I'm with my family and friends you'll find me performing, singing and dancing to various musical numbers!

Q. What do you do, and what’s your favourite thing about it?

A. I work as a Social Media Consultant and have recently gone freelance to start my own business! It's crazy and hectic but I love how fast-paced it is and that every day is different.

Q. What are you watching/reading/listening to at the moment?

A. I'm currently watching RuPaul's Drag Race – I've always been obsessed with it! I think in another life I would have been a drag queen. I'm also getting into business podcasts because I always learn something new from each and I'm a boss lady now so I need to know my stuff!

Q. Swear-by beauty tip?

A. Exfoliating! I've been doing this regularly for a while now and it's such a game changer for your face and body! Although I always make sure to use ones with natural ingredients so they don't scratch your skin.

Q. Do you have a specific scalp care routine? (And any MONPURE products you’re loving?!)

A. Speaking of exfoliating...since working with MONPURE I've started using the Clarifying Scalp Scrub which I can't get enough of! Having my scalp exposed means I need to take extra care of it and so the scrub is the perfect product for this (I'd also recommend it to people with hair). I follow up with the Hydrate and Soothe Scalp Serum too, it smells and feels amazing!

Q. Name one thing that makes you smile.

A. Puppies.

Q. What are the biggest misconceptions about your particular type of hair loss?

A. That I'm stressed or have some sort of terminal illness. People think they can make judgements about you because of the way you look. I've had some ridiculous and upsetting things said to me in the past by people who have absolutely no right in judging me, simply because I don't have a full head of hair.

Q. What is the main thing you would like people to take away from this campaign?

A. I think because I'm so confident now, I forget how hard the whole journey was. When I was filming the campaign I got really emotional, because I think I still bottle up a lot of those feelings without realising that I'm still really affected by it. Sometimes when I'm talking about it to people, I get a lump in my throat which I'm sure no one would ever realise because I never show it. So my biggest take-away for myself is just to let it out. If I feel sad about my journey, it's ok. It was a traumatic 10 years, so I think it's normal to cry or feel emotional about it every so often.

Mimi

Q. What are you excited about for 2021?

A. I'm excited about the campaign launching, my new business and hopefully coming out of lockdown! I miss my family and friends so much and I just want to be with them again.

Q. What was your favourite thing about being part of this campaign?

A. For me, it was meeting the other contributors. I've never felt so instantly close to a group of people before, it's like we already knew each other. We have this huge shared experience and it was so amazing hearing everyone's individual stories and being able to truly empathise with them.

Mimi

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A. I would just like to thank MONPURE for making this campaign possible. For giving us a platform to tell our story and doing it in an amazing way. I truly feel so much good can come from this and hopefully we can encourage more women to talk about their journey and feel confident doing so. Together, we can normalise women with hair loss.
