Meet

Christala

“Hi I’m Christala Fletcher. When I first started losing my hair, I felt awful, anxious and depressed. I was nine and had no idea what was happening or how to control it. Now 20 years later, I am very content with my hair loss and appearance. I can attribute my confidence to my alopecia, as it has allowed me to explore who I am as a person beyond just my looks. Alopecia has made me more empathetic and a whole lot stronger.

When I was initially contacted to be a part of the campaign, I thought it would be a fantastic way to raise awareness of female hair loss, as it is not discussed widely within the media. I thought it would be a great way to share my story so that other women would not feel alone and drum up conversation outside of the immediate hair loss community.”

Q&A

Mimi

Q. How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

A. I'm a proud baldie, and alopecia awareness advocate. I love all things wigs and beauty. I really enjoy travelling and trying new foods.

Q. What do you do, and what’s your favourite thing about it?

A. I am professional wig maker, currently contracted to supply wigs to oncology and dermatology NHS patients. My favourite thing about my job is being able to help those with medical hair loss and give them their confidence back.

Q. What are you watching/reading/listening to at the moment?

A. Currently watching Behind Her Eyes and loving all the suspense, twist and turns! Though my guilty pleasure is watching reality TV, specifically The Real Housewives and RuPaul’s Drag Race. I love listening to podcasts on my commute into work, such as Just The Tip and Lip Service.

Q. Swear-by beauty tip?

A. Cleansing my face and scalp is a must, especially as I love doing my makeup so I have to make sure it’s all off before bed. Being bald you can't just stop at your face, you have to include your scalp that goes for make-up and skincare.

Q. Do you have a specific scalp care routine? (And any MONPURE products you’re loving?!)

A. In the shower I use a scalp scrub and cleanser. After shaving, I use the MONPURE Hydrate and Soothe Scalp Serum, which smells and feels amazing and keeps my scalp from getting any dry patches from shaving. Once a week I will do a face and scalp mask.

Q. Name one thing that makes you smile.

A. My furbaby (Coco) greeting me at the door when I come home after a long day at the clinic!

Q. What are the biggest misconceptions about your particular type of hair loss?

A. The most common misconception is that I did this to myself. That through terrible habits I somehow caused my hair loss when in fact I have an autoimmune disorder. The assumptions made about my hair loss are really upsetting and hurtful when I have had no control over it, even doctors today still know very little about alopecia and unfortunately there is no cure for many sufferers who seek one.

Q. What is the main thing you would like people to take away from this campaign?

A. I would like people to be educated on female hair loss, as it deserves as much attention as male hair loss gets. I would like people to see that we are beautiful even without our hair.

Mimi

Q. What are you excited about for 2021?

A. Building my business and brand. Creating more content and eventually being able to travel again – I’m thinking The Maldives!
