Once the preserve of a small minority of strident activists, more and more of us are embracing veganism. And the benefits to the environment are hard to ignore. According to research, if the world went vegan, it could save 8 million human lives by 2050, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two thirds and lead to healthcare-related savings and avoided climate damages of $1.5 trillion.
But veganism isn’t just about what’s on your plate but what’s in your bathroom cabinet too. Indeed, many skincare brands are starting to get on-board with vegan-friendly formulas. And there are multiple benefits to incorporating them into your routine.
What makes a product vegan?
A vegan beauty product doesn’t contain any animal by-products or animal-derived ingredients, such as beeswax and honey, silk protein and lanolin (an emollient derived from sheep’s wool). Other ingredients that might slip under the radar include biotin, cetyl alcohol, keratin, and gelatine.
Not only is vegan scalp and haircare better for the planet (not to mention the animals!), but vegan ingredients also tend to be kinder to the skin – which makes them ideal for sensitive scalps. Vegan formulas are also usually more alkaline too, making them great for calming inflammation and soothing stressed scalps – especially those affected by acne and eczema.
How do I know if a product is vegan?
There’s no need to scrutinise ingredients lists, as most vegan beauty products usually have a ‘V’ logo on the packaging, making them easy to spot.
