The Importance of Scalp Health

We often take our scalp for granted, with many symptoms like itchiness, dryness, redness and hair loss seen as normal. But if our hair is looking a little lacklustre and snapping off at the ends, it could be an underlying issue with our scalp that’s to blame. Healthy hair starts with the scalp after all! At MONPURE, we are here to guide you on how to keep your scalp healthy.

So how healthy is your scalp?

If you have a regular scalpcare routine, using MONPURE’s Clarifying Scalp Scrub, Nourish and Stimulate Scalp Mask and Hydrate and Soothe Scalp Serum, you’re halfway there. And to help you further, we’ve highlighted a few of the most common signs of poor scalp health and how to treat them.

Signs of an Unhealthy Scalp

Among the common signs of poor scalp health is constant itchy, oiliness, frequent flaky skin or a sudden increase in hair loss. If you feel like you’re unable to skip washing your hair every day without your scalp becoming itchy and greasy, then this could be another sign of poor scalp health. It can mean your sebaceous glands are overactive, a condition known as seborrheic dermatitis, thought to affect about 4% of the adult population. One way to ease its symptoms is with our Hydrate and Soothe Scalp Serum. Its star ingredient is witch hazel, which thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, can help calm the scalp’s sebaceous glands and regulate moisture levels with pro vitamin B5 and allantoin.

Other common symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis include itchy, red scalp-skin, accompanied by scaly patches and dandruff (oily, large flakes of skin). Itching and redness could also be symptoms of scalp eczema or psoriasis, which can lead to hair loss if not treated. If symptoms are serious, you should use a tar-based shampoo, usually with coconut oil and salicylic acid to help dissolve the dead skin build-up.

If you notice your hair looking limp and thin, with stunted growth, this could be due to the products you’re using. If you apply lots of styling products (such as gel, dry shampoo and hairspray) and not cleansing your scalp properly, then these can clog the hair follicles and irritate the scalp-skin – which can lead to hair thinning and hair loss in extreme cases. That’s why it’s important to cleanse it regularly with a mild, plant-based shampoo such as our Strengthening Silk Protein Shampoo.  It’s also a good idea to avoid hair products containing silicones that can also clog hair follicles and weigh the hair down.

Dealing with a dry, flaky scalp? This looks very similar to dandruff, but the skin flakes are smaller and usually accompanied by dry patches of skin elsewhere on your body. Your shampoo is possibly to blame. Many contain harsh formulas such as sulphates that can leave the scalp and hair stripped of moisture. Showering with too-hot water and over-washing can also lead to scalp dryness. Regularly exfoliating your scalp with our Clarifying Scalp Scrub can remove the dead skin flakes as well as replenish moisture levels with argan oil and shea butter.

If your scalp often feels tight and sore, it could be a sign of stress due to wearing too-tight hairstyles, braids and extensions. As well as feeling uncomfortable, it can put too much pressure on the hair follicles and lead to traction alopecia in extreme cases, which is when the roots are damaged leading to scarring and hair loss. If you’ve noticed hair thinning and loss, you can revive flagging hair follicles with our Follicle Boost Hair Density Serum, which contains pumpkin seed extract and castor oil to ‘feed’ the scalp with everything it needs to help stimulate healthy hair growth.
