Ingredients

A natural toner, astringent and anti-inflammatory that is ideal for treating irritated scalps. It works to tighten pores, remove excess sebum and regulate its production, alleviate skin ailments and soothe sensitive skin.

Extracted from the root of the comfrey plant, this active ingredient holds moisturising, soothing, protectant and anti-irritant properties for the hair and scalp. As an emollient and astringent, it accelerates wound healing, while cleansing and softening the scalp.

A famed skincare ingredient and the most prominent beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that works to alleviate scalp acne, psoriasis, dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. It is oil-soluble, allowing it to deeply penetrate the follicles and decongest them. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic, meaning it aids in exfoliation and soothing inflammation.

THE SCALP MICROBIOME

The scalp microbiome, a complex ecosystem of microbes, is the first line of defence against harmful pathogens, shielding the follicles and scalp from infection, toxins, irritation and hair damage.

Just like the skin, a healthy scalp microbiome requires a symbiosis of healthy bacteria and yeast, but can go awry when thrown off balance. Scalp serums cultivate a healthy scalp microbiome.

addressing hair & scalp health at the root

Hormones

Hormonal changes during menopause, the menstrual cycle, and postpartum can disrupt scalp health. Reduced oestrogen leads to less collagen production and imbalanced oil levels, causing irritation. Sudden oestrogen drops during menstruation and postpartum phases can also result in oilier scalps, potentially leading to itching and flaking, especially for those prone to scalp issues. These hormonal shifts affect the scalp's oil balance and collagen synthesis, contributing to discomfort and irritation.

Stress

Stress increases the level of the hormone cortisol in our bodies. This has a direct effect on the health of the scalp and follicle. Cortisol disrupts the skin’s barrier function, as well as cell production, triggering flakes, inflammation and irritation on the scalp. Cortisol also compromises the body’s immune system, allowing yeast such as Candida or Malassezia to thrive and flare-up.

Lifestyle

Under-shampooing can result in build-up, flakes and excess oils, leading to issues like folliculitis, dandruff, and sebum build-up. On the other hand, too-frequent washing can cause a dry and itchy scalp for some. This usually occurs when shampoo contains stripping ingredients such as sulphates, that strip the scalp and hai of their natural oils. Using waxy styling products, heavy oils, dry shampoo and products with film-forming ingredients such as silicones can produce a moisture-impenetrable coat on the hair and scalp, causing dryness and irritation.

Hard Water & Climate

Environmental factors like hard water, cold and dry climates, and excessive heat can trigger scalp irritation. Hard water, rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium, forms a film on the scalp, blocking moisture and follicles, leading to itchiness and inflammation. In cold and dry climates, low humidity causes itchiness, tightness, and flakes, worsening existing scalp conditions. Heat, especially from hot water, strips the scalp's protective lipids, breaks protein bonds in the cuticle, and dries the scalp, causing itching, flaking, oiliness, and congested follicles. These environmental elements disrupt scalp health and contribute to various forms of irritation and discomfort.

Psoriasis or Eczema

Eczema, also called dermatitis, is the umbrella name for a group of conditions that cause rash-like scalp irritation. Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory and autoimmune skin condition that can affect the skin, including the scalp. It is caused by the rapid overproduction and build-up of skin cells, in which the immune system mistakenly sends signals to these skin cells to multiply too quickly. Scalp psoriasis can affect the scalp, hairline, and may even creep up the nape of the neck and around the ears.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I use this product?

We recommend using the Hydrate and Soothe Scalp Serum daily if you are experiencing a flare-up of scalp irritation. If you would like to spot treat, use the serum for instant relief when necessary.

How long does a bottle of serum last?

How long the serum lasts depends on the frequency that you use it, but a little goes a long way. If you use it as a daily treatment, it should last around 6-8 weeks (on average). If you use it to spot treat areas of concern, it can last longer, around 3 months on average. Once opened, the life of the serum lasts between 18-24 months.

Should I apply the serum to wet or dry hair?

The serum can be applied when hair is dry, damp or towel-dried after a shower. We recommend applying the serum to damp or towel-dried hair to optimise absorption and to prevent any oily residue.

Can I use the serum while pregnant or breastfeeding?

All products are dermatologically tested, suitable to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding and cruelty free.
