What Types of Amino Acids Are There, and Why Does Your Hair Need Them?
There are 20 types of amino acids that the body uses to build every protein it needs, nine of which are classed as “essential”, meaning the body can't generate them itself and they have to come from food or supplements. Cysteine forms sulphur-to-sulphur bonds between keratin chains. The bonds give hair tensile strength and its ability to hold a shape (this is the same bond chemistry keratin treatments and perms manipulate). More cysteine links generally mean more resilient, less breakage-prone hair.

Methionine is a precursor to cysteine and plays a role in protecting the hair shaft and follicle from oxidative stress during the growth phase.

How Do Amino Acids Affect the Hair Growth Cycle?
Hair grows in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition) and telogen (resting/ shedding); and amino acid availability influences how well the follicle performs through each one.
