Meet

Hattie

“Hi I’m Hattie Gilford. For me, it’s super important to raise awareness of trichotillomania, so when the opportunity to be involved with MONPURE and the #It'sNotJustHair campaign, I just had to be a part of it. I am so fortunate to have an incredible support network around me, but realised that not everyone does.

I believe that speaking about trichotillomania openly will help normalise it and raise awareness of the condition. A lot of people don't even know what trichotillomania is, even though one in 50 people have the condition. I think this is largely because people often feel too ashamed to talk about it, but there is absolutely no shame in having a mental disorder that you can't control. I really hope people watch this campaign and realise that they're not alone.”

Q&A

Mimi

Q. How would you describe yourself in a few sentences?

A. I'm absolutely dog-obsessed, I have the two cutest dogs and they are my absolute world. I love the beach and will try to spend every single weekend I possibly can at one, it instantly picks up my mood. I'm not very good at conventional sports but am happiest on the water, either sailing, wakeboarding or canoeing. Family and friends are really important to me, I feel incredibly lucky to have such a great support network.

Q. What do you do, and what’s your favourite thing about it?

A. I work in advertising. I love it because of how impactful it is. It can completely change a persons' perspective on a brand and in our rapidly changing world, it can have a huge impact on shaping our society too.

Mimi

Q. What are you watching/reading/listening to at the moment?

A. Don't judge me, but I'm absolutely obsessed with Married At First Sight Australia Season 6. I binged watched 36 episodes in just over a week and had to wait for the final to be released, which nearly killed me!

Q. Swear-by beauty tip?

A. Always take your make-up off before bed, no matter how tired you are.

Q. Do you have a specific scalp care routine? (And any MONPURE products you’re loving?!)

A. Because I pulled out my hair for 18 years, I've caused significant damage to a lot of my hair on the top of my scalp. In the last year I realised it was super important to look after the hair I do have left, so I've been much kinder to my scalp. I now use shampoos and conditioners with higher quality ingredients and I've been exfoliating my scalp with MONPURE's Clarifying Scalp Scrub (which smells delicious).

Q. Name one thing that makes you smile.

A. DOGS, DOGS and more DOGS!

Q. What was your favourite thing about being part of this campaign?

A. Meeting the other incredible women in the campaign and hearing all their stories was so inspirational. I feel so privileged to have spent two days with such a remarkable group.

Q. With regards to your hair loss journey, how did you first feel about it, compared to now?

A. It's really easy for me to forget how hard the journey I've been on has been for me. Whilst I'm incredibly confident and open about my trichotillomania now, it wasn't always this easy. Growing up with ‘trich was incredibly tough, it was hard to have a condition that even doctors didn't understand. I always compared myself to my peers at school with fabulous heads of hair. It was incredibly lonely at times and I felt like I was the only person in the world with trichotillomania, because it's not often spoken about.

Mimi

Q. What are the biggest misconceptions about your particular type of hair loss?

A. People often say 'just stop pulling your hair out" which is absolutely impossible – it's far from that simple. I battled trichotillomania for 18 years and it's the hardest journey I've ever been on.

Q. What is the main thing you would like people to take away from this campaign?

A. That you're not alone.

Mimi

Q. What are you excited about for 2021?

A. I'm so excited to show the campaign with my friends and family. We got a sneak preview a couple of months ago and I've been buzzing with excitement ever since. It's been produced so beautifully I'm incredibly proud of being able to take part in this.

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

A. Thank you MONPURE, without you I wouldn't have met the most incredible group of women. I know this campaign is going to help and inspire so many other people, and that's truly special.
